Six weeks after defeating John Ruiz to win the WBA heavyweight title on March 1, 2003, the WBA received written confirmation from Jones that he would keep the heavyweight title and relinquish his light heavyweight title. However, he was unable to secure the fights he wanted at heavyweight. Promoter Murad Muhammad said, "We worked on a Holyfield fight and it fell through. We worked on a Tyson fight and it fell through. We wanted Lennox Lewis, but he's not fighting." Jones considered fighting Corrie Sanders but decided against it. "Why would I fight a guy who's 6-4, lefthanded and doesn't have a title for less money than I made to fight John Ruiz?" Jones asked rhetorically. Jones finally decided to return to light heavyweight and fight Tarver, who had won two of Jones' vacated light heavyweight titles.
Jones was guaranteed $5 million and Tarver received $1.6 million.
Jones was an 8-1 favorite.
There was a crowd of 8,794.
Tim Smith of the New York Daily News reported: "He [Jones] had to lose 25 pounds to move down from heavyweight to make the 175-pound limit to face Tarver. Five days before the match, Jones weighed 183 pounds. He was gaunt and drawn at the weigh-in. He sat slumped on a stool while he waited to step on the scales. Once he climbed into the ring, Jones was drained after four rounds and survived mainly because Tarver decided to counter instead of pressing the action."
Tarver landed 120 of 504 total punches (24%). He threw 255 power shots and landed 73 (29%). Jones landed 111 of 424 total punches (26%). He threw 252 power shots and landed 94 (37%).

The fight was the main event of a pay-per-view titled "March Badness" that included both boxing and mixed martial arts matches.
Jones Jr. (52-5) came in ranked as the #6 light heavyweight in the world by The Ring. In his previous fight, he lost a lopsided decision to Joe Calzaghe for The Ring light heavyweight title. Sheika (27-8) came in having lost six of his last ten bouts. It was only his second fight since September of 2005.
Jones Jr. used distance and hand speed to land almost at will against the ring-rusty Sheika. As pay-per-view announcer Bob Sheridan observed, Sheika was "a perfect opponent for Roy."
Sheika suffered a bad cut on the bridge of his nose early in the fifth round. At 1:45, referee Tommy Kimmons stepped in and waved an end to the bout. Sheika was very disappointed with what he and his corner felt was an early stoppage. Sheika did not appear to be visibly shaken by the punches, but Jones was in total command and landing a lot of shots to the head. Bob Sheridan called it "a good stoppage."
In the post-fight interview, when asked if he would fight again, Jones Jr. turned to his hometown crowd and asked, "Do ya'll want me back?" His fans answered with a resounding yes. "Well, ya'll heard what they said," he responded. "I guess I better get back to training...let my hands heal up for a few days then I'm back."

43-year-old Roy Jones Jr. was originally scheduled to fight Dawid Kostecki, who was 39-1 and ranked #4 at light heavyweight by the WBC. However, Kostecki was arrested on June 19 in order to begin serving a 2½-year prison term. When Jones negotiated his deal with 12 Knockout Promotions, the fight's promoter, he was assured that Kostecki would not start serving his sentence until after the fight. 12 Knockout Promotions tried to secure a temporary release for Kostecki but were unsuccessful. Their final request was denied on the morning of the weigh-in. Pawel Glazewski, who was on standby all week for the imprisoned Kostecki, stepped in as a replacement. Glazewski was 17-0 and ranked #9 at light heavyweight by the WBC.
Fightnews.com reported: "Jones was quick enough and sharp enough to outscore the light punching Glazewski early on. Jones was doing a lot of showboating in the bout until Glazewski dropped him with a left hook in round six. Glazewski outworked Jones after that, but Roy landed some good punches in round ten that slightly staggered Glazewski and likely won the bout for him."
